The Qalandar Code is the culmination of more than eighteen years spent alongside the Malangs of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar's shrine in Sehwan, Pakistan.
Beginning as a personal search to understand the living traditions surrounding one of South Asia's most revered Sufi saints, the film explores a spiritual heritage preserved through oral memory, sacred geography and the lives of those who continue to carry it.
Through conversations with scholars, mystics and custodians, it documents traditions that have endured beyond official narratives.
Among the accounts preserved by the Malangs
is the tradition that Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, sought refuge in a cave known as Lahoot La Maqan in the mountains of Balochistan.
For Atiya, this unexpectedly echoed the tradition of Mary Magdalene's retreat to the caves of southern France after the crucifixion.
The striking parallel between these two women—preserved in different cultures yet sharing remarkably similar patterns of memory—became the doorway to a much larger investigation into the absent feminine across spiritual traditions, continuing in The Qalandar Code 2: Sacred Union.
Mama the Malang
Every investigation needs a guide. For Atiya, that guide was Mama the Malang.
Years of research had revealed the documented history, but Mama opened the door to the living oral tradition of Sehwan—the knowledge carried from person to person, never written down.
He passed away in 2026, one of the last great keepers of a tradition that survives through those who continue to carry it.
